She looks so small, so fragile. And it hurts because I can’t take her pain away. She hasn’t eaten more than a couples bites in days. Her lips are cracked and bleeding, as are the sores that fill her mouth and talking makes them bleed more. Her breath smells like rotting meat. Her body aches. Her skin is breaking out with a rash. Today, she rated her pain level a 6, based on the Wong Baker Face Pain Scale. She’s never done that high before. She doesn’t want to watch TV, she just wants to sleep. And I can’t do anything but sit here; my mom powers do not extend to fixing this.
Currently, we are getting iv fluids since she’s dehydrated. The Doctor ordered a little bit more in terms of lab work. He wants to check her electrolytes and potassium among other things. She may need a platelet transfusion today on top of the hydration. The good news is he isn’t as concerned about her weight as I would have thought. We were told that we had to get her weight above 14.2 kg last week, or she would need to get an NG tube again(the tube that went up her nose and into her stomach for feeding and for meds). She made it! However, she has now dropped back down to 13.2 kg. Our nurse today thinks that we probably will just need the fluids and possible transfusion as well a couple new meds for her mouth and pain. He doesn’t believe we will be admitted. Fingers crossed that we aren’t spending the weekend at the KD Hotel.
This is her while we wait to be moved to a room.
