Good morning family and friends from Hotel KD room 809. Today’s focus is pain management. Cayla’s mouth sores continue to be pretty intense. Her pain level this morning rated an 8. She is now on a morphine pump to manage her pain level. She is also gagging on her own blood and mucus, as the mucositis extends throughout her GI tract, and throwing it up. Basically, in an extremely over simplified manner, the mucus lining of her GI tract is deteriorating. This is not an uncommon side effect of chemo. Since it hurts to eat or even drink at this point, she hasn’t been. Therefore, tomorrow she will be on TPN or medical feeds through her port. And when her GI tract recovers enough, she will have an NG tube put in to help her gain weight back. Oh, and she tested positive for a cold virus.
There is some good news. Her labs this morning came back showing some recovery. Her White Blood Count doubled and her immune system number did as well. This means hopefully her body will start to heal itself back up soon. And her blood pressure medicine was reduced! Considering we started this journey with 3 different blood pressure medicines and now we’re only one, that was just reduced, I’d say that’s great news.
